Yamaha DX7 Factory Bank
The original stock patches exported from my Yamaha DX7. Some of these sounds are so incredible and so classic at this point — almost archetypal — that there really aren’t true equivalents or analogous patches elsewhere on any other Software or Hardware synth.
For example, I was chasing down the phat, well-defined low-end and authentic DX7 bass sound from Orbital’s “Halcyon On & On.” for a long time. I learned it was from a stock DX7 patch “Solid Bass.”
Nothing online was a proper recreation of the patch. I recall testing some DX-100 version, but it sounded different. They all lacked the transient clarity, and that phat, clear bottom end.
Eventually I acquired a Yamaha DX7, and exported all the original patches as SysEx — and tried loading them into various FM synthesizers.
Only the Free FM VST synth Dexed — when level-matched to my hardware DX7 — sounded perfect to me! Indistinguishable. I was so impressed that I sold the DX7. Since I only got it for that single patch 😅
Then I used the proceeds to start beekeeping. True story ☺️
Patch List

SUNRISE — Gated ethereal sound
Ceremonyws
Brass FULL — Massive mid-range, phat low-end, 80s pad sound
ORCH.SPACE — An absolute gem to play staccato / quickly

DIGI TOOL

GANIJA BASS
S.A.W 87
7th WAVE — I’m a sucker for harmonics, love this one 🙂
SOURBLADES
*PPG*Vol.4 — If this is as good a replication of the PPG as the Moog Rogue patch, then PPGs sound like crap 🙂
WHEEL BASS
STEAM ORGN
7TH HEAVEN
MOOG STRINGS
BIGBADBASS — Awesome bass. Reminds me of the 90s, breakbeat, techno, and modern dubstep.
*Ensemble3
Grinder 6Y — Love this patch in the bass registers, also some famous techno patch I think
BAROQUE
SOLID BASS — Love this bass patch in the mid / bass registers, also a famous techno patch from Orbital
Using with Dexed
With Dexed, you can switch between 3 different implementations of the DX7 FM synthesis engines.
The default engine sounds like a real hardware DX7 with all its 12-bit hiss, artifacts, and transient punch.
Then there’s a cleaner modern FM engine implementation, presumably higher than 12-bit, with no audio glitches or hiss.
